Nutrition Basics

By Dr. Kim Roberto

Your body is a temple, a high performance engine, a masterfully designed vessel.
Let those words sink in for a good long pause.
Now, ask yourself if you 1) believe it and 2) act as if you believe it. These truths should be applied to every aspect of your life including what you put in your body. Good nutrition is a very simple and basic need, yet it is not necessarily easy in practice. As a result, many people have lost sight of its simplicity and importance and have simply given up.

“Life is really simple, but we insist on making it complicated.” Confucius

There are timeless truths when it comes to how to nourish the human body that have been almost completely ignored in today’s modern diets. Imagine for a moment that our diets remained unchanged over the last hundreds or thousands of years. Imagine all of us eating meat from animals that roam green pastures and forage for nutritious foods designed for their bodies. Imagine us all consuming non-GMO, pesticide-free, fertilizer-free fruits and vegetables grown in fertile, nutrient-dense soil. Imagine having access to energy-rich, naturally derived, unadulterated fats. Image that processed, chemically laden foods did not exist. What would our world look like? The answer is: drastically different! This, along with the other essentials would have a drastic impact on the state of our current health. After all, ALL food was organic in the beginning and for hundreds of years. Only recently have we started labeling foods as “organic”. Shouldn’t it be the other way around?

Shouldn’t we be labeling foods that are non-organic, man-made, chemically altered, etc.? That seems like a more reasonable, truthful approach. How did we get to the point where we are labeling and identifying real food and accept processed “food” as the norm?

Traditional diets are vastly different from modern diets and unfortunately, are detrimental to human health! Here are just some examples of just how far we have strayed away from the natural order.

We have become a culture of people who are looking for the easiest, most pleasing, cheapest food rather than looking at food as it was intended- as FUEL! No one would pull up to a gas tank in their brand new Ferrari and fill it up with diesel fuel. Everyone would agree that they would use high-test fuel to support the high performance engine. Your body is the ultimate high performance engine (a temple, remember) and should be treated with extreme care and respect. Your body is literally dying for the food it needs. It is a faithful servant that diligently takes what you give it and does its best with what it gets. Your body is ecstatic (picture your 10 trillion cells doing a happy dance) when it is given foods it was designed to utilize. However, when we give our bodies the Standard American Diet, it has to make due but things start to suffer. Eventually, the parts of the well-oiled machine begin to fail. This is when symptoms start to emerge, organs become dysfunctional, and health starts to deteriorate. Keep in mind that these things happen behind the scenes long before you even know it.

Many people have lost sight of what real nutrition is and often feel overwhelmed with the thought of making changes. Remember that although man has made it complicated, nutrition is simple.

  • Whole foods (no label required)
  • As close to the source as possible
  • Naturally raised and/or grown
  • Unadulterated

The reasons why most people don’t eat the way they should is because they believe it is too hard, that it is too expensive, that it doesn’t taste good, or that they don’t have time. However, those are all excuses that have become a reality for most Americans over time. These excuses simply aren’t true. You can make changes. It is not impossible. After all, diabetes doesn’t care about your excuses. Neither do heart disease, cancer, or any other lifestyle-related disease. No one is going to make changes for you. You have to want it for yourself and for the people who love you. It is like buying an insurance policy or putting money in the bank of health. Don’t let your excuses hold you back from achieving your maximized life.

When you change your mindset to look at food as fuel for your high performance engine, things can start to fall into place. Although it sounds cliché, you will then begin to eat to live instead of living to eat.
